About The Founder

Paul Stamets, D.Sc. has been a dedicated mycologist for over forty years. Over this time, he has discovered several new species of mushrooms, and pioneered countless techniques in the field of edible and functional food mushroom cultivation. Founder, President, and Director of Research for Fungi Perfecti, LLC, a company of over 65 employees shipping goods worldwide, Stamets occupies his days writing, teaching and researching. He engages with staff, students & other mycologists globally about mushroom farming and researching a diverse array of issues in conjunction with universities or nonprofit groups centered on finding fungal solutions to global problems. As Paul states, “the path to the future is the path of the mycelium.”

Paul’s premise that mushroom mycelium connects the immune systems between humans and environment is solidly grounded in science. Stamets’ innovative ideas have gained an increasing audience among mainstream scientists, environmentalists, government officials, and Silicon Valley investors.

Host Defense Paul Stamets TEDAs both a TED and TEDMED speaker, his talks have accumulated over 5 million views  online. Stamets is a decorated innovator and scientist, having received many awards and acknowledgments for his pioneering work in the field of mushrooms. Paul’s recent accolades include the President’s Award from the Society for Ecological Restoration: Northwest Chapter in 2010, the Pioneer Award from the Northwest Natural Products Assoc. in 2012, and the North American Mycological Association (NAMA) award for expanding the field of mycology for amateur and professional mycologists in Jan. 2014.

Paul was  appointed in 2014-2015  as an Invention Ambassador by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the largest and most prestigious scientific organization in the world.

In 2015, Paul received the inaugural "Wasson Award" for expanding the field of mycology from the Mycological Society of America (MSA) more so than any mycologist.

Paul sees the ancient Old Growth forests of the Pacific Northwest as a resource of incalculable value, especially in terms of its fungal genome. A dedicated hiker and explorer, his passion is to preserve and protect as many ancestral strains of mushrooms as possible from these pristine woodlands. Much of the financial resources generated from Fungi Perfecti sales are returned to sponsor such research.
